September 2, 2011, Macaco Tamerice (GEN), Ana Rhodes (Findhorn), Gerd (Transition Training) and May East (Gaia Education) joined as a team the UN DPI Conference in Bonn which is the prime annual event of NGOs in association with the United Nations. The conference's theme in preparation for Rio+20 was Sustainable Societies Responsive Citizens. Our workshop “Designing the Transition to Sustainable Societies: the Role of Education in Engaging Citizens” was oversubscribed and we had hundreds trying to get into an overcrowded room with people standing up and sitting on the floor. We have widely networked in-between sessions, made our organisations visible, contributed to the final manifesto, co-created a joint strategy to Rio+20. Most of all, we have renewed our commitment and enthusiasm to contributing to the civil society global movement towards a holistic approach of sustainable development. Over the next months, as Brazil decides the parameters of civil society involvement, we will be detailing our participation before and during the The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20 (also guided by a working group that emerged from Gaia Rio currently taking place in the Botanic Gardens of Rio).
